To Whom It May Concern:
We are hereby submitting signatures of 23,717 people of Shan State opposed to the building of dams on the Salween River. The signatures were collected during August 2015 from townships throughout Shan State, particularly adjoining the Salween River. Those who signed were from all walks of life –farmers, workers, shopkeepers, traders, monks, Member of Parliament, students, and teachers – who want to protect our precious river, and ensure that it continues to sustain our culture, economy and environment, as it has been doing for thousands of years.

Shans present 23,717 signatures against Salween dams to Australian consultants in Yangon
Shan community representatives are today presenting 23,717 signatures opposing the building of dams on the Salween River to the Australian company Snowy Mountains Engineering Corporation (SMEC) at their office in Yangon.

In the past few months, plans have been accelerated to build the Upper Salween (Mong Ton) dam in southern Shan State, which is a joint project between China’s Three Gorges Corporation, the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, and Myanmar’s Ministry of Electric Power and International Group of Entrepreneurs.
