About Us

Shan Women’s Action Network (SWAN) is a community-based organization led by Shan women active in Shan State in Myanmar and in Thailand. Since its founding on March 28, 1999, SWAN has worked to advance gender equality and justice for Shan women through grassroots programs, research, advocacy, and community action. The network formed as a response to the needs of women affected by conflict, displacement, and exclusion, and continues to strengthen women’s voices in social and political change.

SWAN is also a founding member of the Women’s League of Burma, collaborating with women’s organizations across Burma to promote women’s rights nationally and regionally.

Our Vision

SWAN is envisioning Union of Burma, as a federal democratic country, premised on social and political justice, gender and ethnic equality.

Our Mission

Our mission is to promote the rights, wellbeing, and leadership of Shan women and girls. We work to increase women’s participation, influence, and decision-making both within their own communities and in broader society. Through research, documentation, and advocacy, we support policies and practices that uphold dignity, equality, and justice for all women.
