Nang Mork Mwe Khao, who wants to conserve the environment in Shan State

“Mining can be harmful to our water resources and cause water pollution. These are violations of our rights,” said Nang Mork Mwe Khao, a young land rights activist and environmentalist. “Land and natural environment are necessary for all human beings. In the name of “Development”, the government of that time confiscated farmlands, occupied lands and built dams, conducted mining projects”.
 
When she graduated in 2018, she decided to work for a suitable company and live a simple life, but changed her mind as she has seen land grabbing, environmental destruction, and problems in Shan State every day. She has been working as a land and environmental activist for four years. But not been satisfied with the result, and she had to stop some activities because of the current political situation.
 
“When I saw the destruction of lands and the environment in Shan State, many thoughts came to mind. What have I been doing for Shan people? What has done for Shan State, the land where I live? How long can we survive without having these lands and the natural environment? These questions pushed me to become an environmental activist.”
